PLAYLIST TRADITIONS AUGUST 23, 2009

Any comments, queries, requests are welcome via e mail to wfdutraditions@yahoo.com Your thoughts on today's program and the mix would be greatly appreciated. Don't forget that the program is archived on http://www.wfdu.fm/ for two weeks and there are also bios of the hosts up on it.

Hudson Harding Music has generously sent over some assorted CDs to offer you and that shall happen the next time I am on the air (9/6) so be sure to tune in. In the meantime let us try something different---a trivia question that was asked on yesterday's program and was not answered will be repeated here and the one who e mails in the the correct answer to this 2 part question will receive one of the CDs mentioned above. the mailings are time stamped so the first one gets it--For who's program (radio and TV) did the Phil Harris Orchestra perform and to whom was Phil Harris married? You need both parts and your honesty to stay away from the Google button is expected.

PLAYLIST SUNDAY SIMCHA AUGUST 16, 2009

Any comments, queries, requests, and the ever popular kvetching please e mail sundaysimcha@yahoo.com

A few brief comments about this playlist. For those of you who are very observant---not in the religious sense--you will notice that this is an "encore" presentation from approximately 1 year ago. For good reason. You might want to share this bit of trivia with friends or relatives or have them visit this site.

You all realize, surely, that this is the 40th anniversary of Woodstock BUT it is also the 40th anniversary of another event---an almost forgotten one. That same weekend there was a concert in the northern fringes of Central Park labeled as a "Black Woodstock"--though it had a much classier title. It featured some of the leading Black performers of the day ---B B King, Sly and The Family Stone (also at Woodstock), and---best of all--Nina Simone. NYC would not offer security for the event so The Black Panthers volunteered security. Compared to Woodstock it was a much more organized and prepared community event. Which brings me to a question---what is it about Woodstock and its hardships, financial disaster (at the time), and truly dangerous moments that makes this so intriguing to so many---and why at 40?

The final point of all this is the reason for the "encore". Nina Simone. She was presented today and had a close tie with so many communities---including the Jewish one in the form of Shlomo Carlbach.

Next week you will hear a few pieces by the "King of Yiddish Music"--Leo Fuld. His career encompassed much more than that---writing for major TV programs, appearing on the Yiddish stage, and also an active participant in the Dutch Resistance (well, the Dutch Government in exile in WW2). The following week I will be featuring his music and his story in addition to our usual features. If you want a profile of someone please do let me know---Paul Robeson comes to mind.

PLAYLIST TRADITIONS AUGUST 6, 2009

Any comments, queries, requests, or comments please e mail wfdutraditions@yahoo.com

I do hope you will look on the right side at some videos that are posted. JOEL MABUS is truly a treasure---dare I say a national treasure (even though he is rarely in our neck of the woods)--and his new CD is right up there with all his wonderful previous work.

On the "Program Notes Page you will find some videos of Les Paul and Mary Ford---we lost that Icon now and Mary Ford many years back. Perhaps they will now be able to tell us "How High The Moon".

Since this is the page for Playlists it also includes the brilliant artists I present on SUNDAY SIMCHA and now you will find some videos from a giant of the Yiddish Stage (and film) LEO FUCHS. As they say in Yiddish---"...gib a kik aher". Probably spelled the damned thing wrong.

This was a week of loss and also of one of finding renewed vibrancy in the amount of new material being put out by artists that have been with us for much time and also new comers. Mike Seeger was wonderful artist and had great heart in his unassuming persona and involving people in his music---if this were Sunday Simcha I would say he was a 'MENSCH' in every sense of the word. He and his music will forever be with us and our "heirs".

I would urge those of you who missed the part with Red Rock Rondo to go to their website and find out about the DVD. A brilliant piece of work that will totally absorb you.

Another heads up for you is that Jonathan Edwards will be joining me on the program in the fall prior to his appearance in Teaneck, NJ at Mexicali Blues.

Don't forget the programs are now archived for 2 weeks at http://www.wfdu.fm/ . At that site you can also see a bio of some of the hosts of various programs at the station.

Some faces to put to the voices you heard this week:
DICK SHAWN

Dick Shawn died while performing on stage and collapsed just after a punch line. The audience believed it was a joke---sort of what people felt about the demise of ANDY KAUFMAN and they both had very similar senses of humor. Dick Shawn was 64.
