PLAYLIST TRADITIONS MAY 31, 2009

First of all---a solemn and meaningful Memorial Day to you all--the real one which was yesterday.

If you have any input I would surely appreciate hearing from you, which you can do by writing to wfdutraditions@yahoo.com . Any comments, requests, queries are always welcome.

Today we had some really interesting items, I believe. I hope you who listened agreed. A bevy of new works, a nice trip down memory lane and then, of course, the time spent with the wonderful Calypso group of yore---THE TALBOT BROTHERS. On June 7 Clement Talbot--a family member and a leading executive at the Bank of Bermuda will be my guest. He was the guiding light in putting together the project I spoke of---and played from--today.

As to the new works. How delighted I was to be able to debut some of the following---Buskin and Batteau, Diane Jones, Joe Price, and Tom Chapin---amongst others.

Now, a few pictures to put a face with the voice:

PLAYLIST SUNDAY SIMCHA MAY 31, 2009

Today's program was the one you missed if you tuned in at the proper time two weeks ago. If you tuned in at 9 AM you heard and---and were surprised---or if you were a listener to Paul Butler you were disappointed.

Last week, you know, we featured Theodore Bikel because of our interesting conversation with him and also due to his imminent celebration of his 85th Bday (belatedly) at Carnegie Hall on June 15. I believe you might still find some tickets available by going to the Carnegie Hall website or calling them.

A few shots of some of the artists this week so you can put a face to the voice:

PLAYLIST SUNDAY SIMCHA MAY 24, 2009

If you have any comments, queries, requests, and/or general kvetching please do e mail sundaysimcha@yahoo.com That is always welcomed.

You probably realize that today's program was devoted entirely to the work and the persona of THEODORE BIKEL in anticipation of the wonderful gala planned for him on June 15 at Carnegie Hall with an all star cast of friends and great talents.

Next week's program will encompass what you missed last week when, for some reason, there was a glitch and Paul Butler's excellent Imagination Parade ( for children) was aired. I have not found out the reason but, assuredly, it was a technical glitch that will not be repeated because you---as do I---expect radio to be there when we expect it.

Only one picture this week because she was a surprise---a most pleasant one--to be included in the roster of artists at the Gala on June 15---you have already seen what Theodore Bikel looks like (check the main page) and Alan Alda did not appear on this program but will me at Carnegie Hall on that occasion:

PLAYLIST TRADITIONS MAY 17, 2009

For any comments, queries, requests and misc. material I always appreciate your input. Just e mail wfdutraditions@yahoo.com

I am hoping that many of you heard my conversation with Theodore Bikel and found it as interesting as I did in having it with him.

While new CDs are usually not featured---as they are on some programs--there does come a time when a CD arrives that is so worthy of more interest than just one track being played and a brief announcement---a CD that once you own it you want to hear it over and over. This week a CD from Jim Photoglo arrived and it is the perfect example of what I am talking of. There have been others over the years--Kate Campbell, Susan Werner, anything by Appleseed Recordings (for which the idealistic JIM MUSSELMAN has to be thanked), and a few others.

OK you may ask why I did not mention Phil Ochs or Harry Chapin. Surely, you know why.

A few pictures now to put a face with the voice you heard this week:

JIM PHOTOGLO (has written for Dolly Parton, toured with Dan Fogelberg, appeared as a duo with FREEBO in many places --including the WFDU showcase at NERFA (n0t his biggest gig for sure)

PLAYLIST SUNDAY SIMCHA MAY 17, 2009

Any comments, queries, requests or general kvetching please email sundaysimcha@yahoo.com Correspondence always welcome.

We have to offer sincere apologies for today. I am still trying to get to the bottom of what occurred. You know that many of the Sunday Simcha programs--while new--are pre-recorded. Today's program was one of those. Those who tuned it at 10 AM were surely surprised to find the 9 AM Children's Program (Imagination Parade---a fine show for the wee ones) on at 10 AM. I know that I am upset when I tune in a radio station (or TV--I prefer radio) and find the usual fare not there.

I received a few calls asking me what happened and I, frankly, did not and do not, now, know. I will surely let you know once I find out. This will not, hopefully, happen again. My dear old dad was right---depend on yourself and not others. Unfortunately in today's complex and technical world it is an impossible thing. One has to trust in others for support and completion of technical tasks.

Enough of this now. Here is a listing of what you would have heard---we shall forgo the pictures since you did not hear the program. I do hope you will be tuned in next week when THEODORE BIKEL joins us and we devote the entire program to him, his music, and talk of his big birthday bash at Carnegie Hall. Those of you who listen to TRADITIONS heard part of it today---the SUNDAY SIMCHA piece will focus more on his Yiddishkeit and music in that genre.

PLAYLIST TRADITIONS MAY 3, 2009

If you were tuned in you realize that the scheduled 1 hour commemoration of Pete Seeger's Birthday ran for 2 hours. You will notice that I tried to present not only Pete but put him into a historical context along with some of the performers that appeared at the gala event at Madison Square Garden. The accounts are glowing and I am sure Ron will be speaking of it this upcoming Sunday when he is on.

The 2 hour commemoration/tribute started with a performer who, I feel, more than anyone encompassed the sense of Pete Seeger with his song "Old Folkie"---especially with one of the lines ""....when you look into his eyes you know there's someone in there..." Harry Chapin! Amazingly that song was written approximately 30 years ago and, of course, sadly, Harry Chapin is no longer with us.
The usual features and some new material started the program so that the rest of the program could be devoted to Pete Seeger's Celebration.
A few pictures to put a face with the voice this week---------

PLAYLIST SUNDAY SIMCHA MAY 3, 2009

It is hoped that you were as impressed as I was with the piece(s) by Lorin Sklamberg and Susan McKeown. Ecumenism at its best---she had, as I noted, performed with the Klezmatics and he is their lead singer. A distinctive voice.

We all have to appreciate an icon that is celebrating his 90th birthday today with a huge celebration---benefiting his major cause---Clearwater at Madison Square Garden with a bevy of great artists and there are also events all over the world with the title---Sing For Pete's Sake. Proceeds for Clearwater.

You will also note Theodore Bikel on the list here. His 85th birhday was on May 2 (we share that in common--and our birthplace) and on June 17 there will be a huge concert at Carnegie Hall to commemorate it with the proceeds going to his main cause---Juvenile Justice. More later on that.

Here are some pictures to put a face with the voice this week.
